These thermally processed glasses are subjected to heating with programmed intensity and
time, and are then rapidly (tempered) or gradually (heat strengthened) cooled, thus
making it harder than the original "raw" glass. By increasing their hardness, their behavior
to possible breaks by impacts, structural movements or thermal stress is enhanced.
The hardness of "tempered" glass is 4 times more than that of a common glass. When
broken, the glass will be broken into millions of particles as small as bean, minimizing
wounds.
In the case of thermoset glass, the hardness is twice as much as that of a
common glass and it breaks in larger pieces similar to those of common glass.
This type of glass is used in large shop windows or Hermetic double glazed units subject to
great stress, large dimensions, and especially in roofs and ceilings.
